A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in national works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
