Minister Says Ministry of Defence Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Advised to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been instructed to avoid talking about secret information in any vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.

He explained that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about safety.

When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This wider defence environment underscores the importance of robust measures and caution in all aspects of government activities, including transport use to discussions practices.
