New research suggests that individuals who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these drugs should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
