Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
