TikTok Influencers Driving Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Drug

An underground economy for unlicensed weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Traction Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for source information, while also receiving discount codes.

Thriving Commerce on Social Networks

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors promote the drug there before directing customers to other platforms for transactions.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

This medication is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries

Nevertheless, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering products of unknown origin.

Several professionals stated the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.

Several influencers attempt to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Content Elimination

According to TikTok, the service has taken down problematic content and banned related keywords and query recommendations. The organization stated it was committed to maintaining the platform secure and investing in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Trading Activities

Research also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.

Within minutes of entering one group, a vendor shared contact information, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller sent an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Details and Pricing

Inside these communities, posts show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how long a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Warnings

“People are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not include what they claim,” stated a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to recent price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, patients are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has already encountered individuals harmed by personal administration from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be contaminated or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
